An Evening with Don Hertzfeldt

This evening Mr. S (RPM) and I went to the legendary landmark Music Box Theatre to catch the single-night viewing of "An Evening with Don Hertzfeldt", animator/director/writer of the very popular, award winning "Rejected" series. If you're not already in the know (and I know you are because you're cool like that), "Rejected" is a series of "commercials" Hertzfeldt was commissioned for by TLC and were subsequently rejected post submission.

  

I've seen the "Rejected" series, but most of the works shown were new to me. The evening started with "The Meaning Of Life" - a thoughtful little short about well, the meaning of life. Hertzfeldt shows a considerable amount of growth from his early, post art school works. His usual 16mm use is honorable since the artist has learned to develope his use of textures and a much more complex storyline. The most memorable short was part of what I thought was the Bill series (which I was later told was merely a coincidence - these two characters in the two shorts running back to back having the same name) developed from "Billy's Balloon".

"Everything Will Be Ok" was the heart wrenching story of an adult Bill, seemingly a schizophrenic whose disorder is killing him. I appreciated the storyline as much as the artistry. Don revisits some early techniques while again inviting us on his journey of technical experimentation and growth. His reflections on isolation seemed to echo his experiences as a solitary artist (or so it seemed from the Q+A).

Speaking of the Q+A, it left me hoping for the evening's end. The incessant redundancy of the (fanboys/girls) crowd's questions were unbearable for a hungry me. At these intimate screenings I always hope to get to know/understand the artist a bit more than when I came in - that's a bit high of a goal, I think. So, for me the best part of the evening was realizing the possible mentally disordered nature of the artist himself and how he's used his work as therapy. Which I find a bit ironic. Perhaps the isolation and long work hours are taking it's toll on the young filmmaker and the complexity of his films are mirroring the lessons Hertzfeldt's learning as a working artist... and adult.

It was a good evening. I was the woman who yelled "HANDS!".
I apparently have tourettes.
Catch him in your city - it's worth the time. He's a brilliant young man.

Reshaping the Haute Aesthetic

Thanks to Miss Fuzzy Bunny over at LustLoveLatex.com we we're tipped to this Vogue article about Nicolas Ghesquiere's rubber pieces for Balenciaga. In our first peeks of the collection we hardly thought the shiny, seemingly ultra manipulated pieces were made of our favorite material. This has been a happy surprise for the HOB team, of course. In our search for more information we stumbled across a few more links that give a more in depth look at the new favorite material of the couture crowd:

You'll have to wait until the start of 2009 to use it, but Moleskin has just released a very limited edition "Day Per Page" diary available in luxe Italian patent leather in either glossy black or invitingly sensual red. At 400 pages, the international favorite has made this one a special stocking stuffer, if not worthy of it's own box, retailing at $588 HK.

 

A bit cheaper but not without it's own unique and enviable charm is UPPERCASE's eclectonote journal. These journals range between 65-75 pages and retail at a cool $28 CAD making this an affordable but no less chic an option. The journals come in several different style catagories giving you the opportunity to stock up on an assortment of these noteworthy useful art pieces.
