*EDIT - typo on the 105 years. That was 145 years.
Yesterday I was swamped with work, red in the face with stress and overwhelmed with the task of being a SBOwner, but I made it my official duty of the day, if I got nothing else done, to vote. And yes, I voted for the Obama-Biden ticket.
When I consider the social implications of Obama winning the presidency, I found myself doubtful. Not only because we've struggled under republican imperialism for 8 of the hardest years in modern history, but as well because Obama is a Black-American. Remember, it's only been 43 years since the passing of the Voter's Rights Act of 1965, and 145 years since the Emancipation Proclamation - the abolishment of slavery. Bigotry and racism aren't vague concepts to the American people, it's what America was built on.
Yes, I'm black but let it be known that my race is very little of the reason I voted for Mr. Obama. My vote counted toward the man who gave me a good plan of action for our impaired nation.
- Our economy is in shambles (as you know). And as entrepreneur, his plan for the Small Business Loan Guarantee - tax credits for new hires and capping the interest rate at a low 4% for high-risk businesses shined favorably around these parts. Small businesses account for more than 50% of employees in the private sector and comprise the majority of job growth in our nation. With layoffs running rampant and job security a distant notion, wouldn't you prefer to work hard and take a chance on yourself for yourself?
- Preserving the tax cuts Bush passed for lower-middle income Americans and repealing those Bush passed for high-income tax brackets.
- Focusing on clean and efficient energy. Relinquishing our dependency on the black gold.
- HEALTH CARE REFORM
I'm just saying, the man has plans. And as a fellow Illinoisan, I'm proud to say Barack Obama is my president.
And yes, I am proud of you America. I'm proud that underlying hate and ignorance of the few didn't cloud the judgment of the many and disillusion you from heading your nearest polling place in record turnout and voting for CHANGE.
